"Unverified" means we did not see a clear statement on the official pages, not that the feature does not exist. Prices and features change; check each vendor before you download or buy. Checked 2026-10-16 except Hazel (2026-10-13).
How to read this table
The "What it does" column summarizes each vendor's own description and is not a ranking. The "Do contents leave the Mac?" column decides whether your files are sent to someone else's servers, so people handling invoices, contracts and IDs should read it first. The price column shows only numbers visible on the vendor's page that day; anything we could not read is marked unverified. Filewise's limits are Apple silicon only, a first-launch download of a local model of about 2 GB, and keeping the original name when it cannot read a file.
What each one is good at
- Hazel: the most predictable when rules are clear and sources are fixed; it can tag, upload and trim the Trash.
- FileZen: runs on Windows, Mac and Linux, and lets you rewrite prompts until the sorting suits you.
- AI File Sorter: free and open source, with cleanup flows for Downloads, photos, screenshots and NAS archives.
- Zush: 145+ naming blocks and templates for people with a fixed naming system, plus your own API key or local models.
- RenameClick: local AI that can transcribe audio before naming and search files by description.
- NameQuick: watches folders and names invoices and scans from presets, and does not invent a date or amount it cannot read.
- Sortio: renames and files into client, matter or property folders; popular with lawyers and agents.
- Sparkle: cleans junk and duplicates and organizes folders in one app.
- Renamer.ai: works in the browser as well as a desktop app; handy for the occasional batch.
- Filewise: Apple-silicon Macs only, reads content, shows a plan before it acts, only renames and moves, never deletes, every step undoable, all on the Mac.
How to choose by situation
- File names say nothing and nothing may leave the Mac: Filewise, or the tools that can run fully locally such as AI File Sorter and RenameClick.
- Rules are clear and you want automatic moving: Hazel.
- You need Windows or Linux: FileZen, AI File Sorter, Zush, RenameClick and other cross-platform tools.
- Filing by client or matter: Sortio.
- You also want disk space back: Sparkle.
- Audio files need names too: RenameClick.
To check for yourself, take 20 real downloads and run them through two tools separately: are the extracted details right, does an unreadable file keep its name, and can a wrong rename be undone? Each tool's side-by-side page is linked in the table.
