Short answer
Pick RenameClick if you need Mac and Windows, audio transcription before naming, or search-by-description. Pick Filewise if you use an Apple-silicon Mac and mostly handle PDFs and scans, free for now.
What is RenameClick
RenameClick presents itself as AI file renaming and organizing by what is inside the file, with local AI at the center: it reads images and documents or transcribes spoken audio locally, then turns cryptic names like 8a095-4d0f6a90008b.pdf into names like Blood_Test_Results.pdf, and lets you review the suggested filename and category folder before applying. After a one-time model download the local provider works with Wi-Fi off. It also offers Auto Flow to watch folders and AI Search: index a folder once, describe the file you want and rename it from the results.
Side by side
| Dimension | Filewise | RenameClick |
|---|---|---|
| How it works | Reads file contents (PDF text layer, OCR on scans) and a local AI proposes names and destinations | Reads images and documents or transcribes audio locally; rename only, sort only, or rename plus sort; AI Search and Auto Flow folder watching |
| Platform | Apple silicon only, macOS 14 or later; a DMG from the website, or install with Homebrew | Mac (an Apple-silicon download on the site, also the Mac App Store) and Windows |
| Price | Free to download for now | The site says no card is needed to start; actual prices were not shown on the pages we read (unverified) |
| Do contents leave your Mac? | No. Reading and naming run on the Mac | Your choice: the built-in model on this Mac (offline after a one-time download), your own model server, or a cloud API |
| Confirm before renaming | Shows an "original name → new name" plan first and acts only after you approve | Yes. You review suggested names and folders before applying; Auto Apply in Auto Flow is optional |
| Undo and deletion | Every step goes into an undo log that survives a restart; it only renames and moves, never deletes | Undo and deletion behavior are not stated clearly on the pages we read (unverified) |
| Supported files | — | Images (JPG, PNG, HEIC and more), documents (PDF, DOCX, XLSX, PPTX, TXT and more) and audio (MP3, WAV, FLAC, M4A, AAC) |
"Unverified" means we did not see a clear statement on the official pages, not that the feature does not exist. Prices, features and user counts are vendor claims and change; check the vendor's own site before you buy or download. Checked 2026-10-16.
How this page was checked
The facts about RenameClick come from its official pages (sources at the bottom), read in a real browser with no signup, no login, no download and no trial of paid features; the Filewise side matches the live version v0.8.0. Dimensions marked unverified here: Price, Undo and deletion. That does not mean the feature is missing, only that the official pages do not state it; we will update after checking.
When to pick RenameClick
- You need a Windows version or the same tool on both systems.
- You rename recordings and voice memos and need local audio transcription first.
- You want to index a folder and find a file by describing it, then rename it from the result.
When to pick Filewise
- Your pile is PDFs, invoices, contracts and scans and you want issuer, amount and date read out before naming.
- You want every step in an undo log that survives a restart, with rename and move as the only actions.
- You want a free Mac tool with no model to choose.
The limits are worth stating too: it needs Apple silicon, the first launch downloads a local model of about 2 GB, and when the local model cannot read a file it keeps the original name instead of guessing, so files it cannot identify still need you.
Migrating or running both
RenameClick keeps its index in its own library and does not alter your files, so there is nothing to migrate. They can coexist: give audio files to RenameClick and PDFs and scans to Filewise, and never run both on the same batch at once.
Try it on your own files (10 minutes)
Reviews are only a starting point; what your files look like is what matters. Take 20 real downloads, including invoices, scans, screenshots and English PDFs, and run them through Filewise and RenameClick separately without letting either touch the originals. Compare three things: whether the extracted details (issuer, date, amount) are right, whether an unreadable file keeps its name or gets an invented one, and whether a wrong rename can be undone in one step. Then turn the network off and see which one still works.
